چکیده

Electric or hybrid electric vehicles (EVs/HEVs) have the advantages that they make lesser noise compared to conventional engine vehicles. This quietness is, however, a matter of concern for pedestrians because the sound of EVs/HEVs may be inaudible in urban backgrounds. Hence, the application of additional soundemitting device has been studied. Gathering wide range of acoustic knowledge on feasible design of the additional sounds is crucial for developing regulations or designing the device itself. Through the authors’ researches, it has been revealed that the type of warning sounds significantly affected the required sound level as well as background levels. A warning sound stimulus, which had lesser loudness level, had lesser detectability. In this present study, the authors confirmed that the warning sounds could have similar detectability if they have similar loudness level. The frequency characteristics of the stimuli were varied while having equivalent powers in each 1/3 octave band so that they shall have equivalent loudness level. Moreover, the hearing impression of the stimuli were examined. The results showed that the impression of warning sounds could be varied while having equal detectability.

Psychoacoustic Examination of Feasible Level of Additional Warning Sound for Quiet Vehicles

The reduced noise of electric and hybrid electric vehicles has been of particular concern because of the potential danger that these vehicles pose to pedestrians when their approach is inaudible against background noise. To address this issue, the use of additional warning sounds in such vehicles is being considered in various countries. The aim of this study was to examine the feasible level o...

Psychoacoustic experiments on feasible sound levels of possible warning signals for quiet vehicles

Vehicles with electric or hybrid engines have the advantages of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engines. However, reduced engine noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible in a given background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl [1]). One possible solution to this problem is the use of warning ...

Cross-cultural study on feasible sound levels of possible warning sounds for quiet vehicles

The Suitability of Internal Combustion Engine Sounds as Artificial Warning Sounds for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

The paper discusses the issue of adding artificial warning sounds to hybrid and fully electric vehicles in order to increase traffic safety by making these vehicles audible at low speeds. The goal of this modification is to enable the pedestrians to perceive possible danger coming from such a vehicle in time to respond accordingly. Following the results of previous research which state that the...
